David Moyes’ managerial span has been in the gutter since 2013, unsuccessful stints at Manchester United, and Real Sociedad has been haunting him lately, however this doesn’t undermine his brilliant work at Everton. Since the start of the Premier League, and prior to Moyes’ arrival Everton have been lying in the bottom half of the table apart from 2 successful seasons with Joe Royle. Moyes’ selection of players within a certain budget helped to establish Everton as a top half team, regularly contending for a european spot.

Along with keeping the numbers straight, Moyes secured players which later proved to be essential to the club’s rise. From £18.49m Marouane Fellaini to £60,000 Seamus Coleman and Steven Naismith on a free. Players such as Joseph Yobo, Tim Cahill, Phill Neville, Mikel Arteta, Joleon Lescott, Yakubu, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, Tim Howard, Steven Pienaar, Johnny Heitinga, Sylvain Distin, Nikica Jelavic, Kevin Mirallas all contributed to the uprise of the people’s club. Furthermore, youth players were also instilled in the first team such as Wayne Rooney, Leon Osman and Ross Barkley. In addition to the success on the field, Everton benefited from the selling of players such as Wayne Rooney, Andy Johnson, Joleon Lescott, Mikel Arteta, and Jack Rodwell.

Moving to the north east of England we find Sunderland, a team last season rescued by the now England manager Sam Allardyce whose January transfer window heavily contributed to the team’s escape from regulation. Wahbi Khazri, Lamine Kone and Jan Kirchhoff were among Sunderland’s best players last season despite arriving in January. Sunderland were shown a glimpse of how a good transfer window can affect the club.

Allardyce’s decision to chose the English national team over Sunderland was a certainty from the day his name was mentioned for the job. However, Sunderland’s appointment of David Moyes could prove vital for them despite losing Sam Allardyce.
